Coldspot depicts a Polar Bear riding an empty ice tray. While the bear’s surface looks like dried cracked mud and the ice tray looks like wood, the entire piece is cast bronze.
Back in the 40s and 50s, the Coldspot Refrigerator came equipped with two aluminum Coldspot ice trays.
The ice tray component of this sculpture titled Coldspot is cast-bronze (as is the polar bear) but the original larger-than-life ice tray was carved from wood. The wooden nature of the tray makes reference to historic ships and boats that were built from wood. Coldspot somewhat surreally evokes a sense of nostalgia and speaks to the inevitable changes in the world that accompany the passage of time. The polar bear drifts quietly on an iceless, wooden ice tray when in an earlier era it would have drifted on a more familiar ice floe.
